Helsinki is a coastal city of peninsulas and islands on the Gulf of Finland at the eastern edge of the Baltic Sea and is built atop the Baltic Shield. To give us a sense and flavor of this unique physical geography, our immersion experience begins at a hostel on a group of small Helsinki islands known generally as Suomenlinna, a former sea fortress and now a UNESCO Heritage Site. The picture is of the ferryboat at the Suomenlinna dock. The ferry connects Suomenlinna to downtown Helsinki. It is winter now, but will be freshly green (and hopefully sunny) when were are here in May, as in the picture below.
